Shirleyn Lim and Wong Phui Nam is two big name in the world of poetry. Shirley might be well-known because of her novel but Wong Phui Nam is more to poetry. I think both of the have different personality even they were in the same field. Shirley is more outspoken while Whong Phui Nam is more quiet person. This is might be according to their different background that they've both grown up. I do think that Wong Phui Nam is more related to represent we as asian or Malaysian. This is because his poetry review Malaysian culture and represent our heritage. Rather than Shirley, she's more to feminism text and by being half asian and half American has influenced her minded to open a new perspective of literature. Her product is more outspoken and being out of our Malaysian culture. Well, it's just what I think. I don't know whether people agree or not. But, meeting both of them given me chances to know them more closely and interact face to face. It's a good oppurtunity isn't it... ^_^

Second simulated teaching is all about King Lear...oh God, I wish I would die rather than do the things. It so hard till my mouth can't open. Huhu, King Lear is rather hard for us to learm. Why we suppose to learn something that we wouldn't use in the future? Only God knows why... However, for the sake of my pointer, I got to finish my simulated teaching with a good grade. And I am going to present my simulated teaching tomorrow. I pray to god that Dr. Edwin will give me a good grade at least to make sure my pointer won't be down anymore.Argghhh, this week is the most pressure for the rest of my batch as we also have to present our micro teaching with Puan Juridah. The most hard to do King Lear for this simulated teaching is to connect it with another stage. However it is interesting for us when we have to brainstorm till we cannot sleep. Hopefully all of us have a fine grade for all this day.

Second play that I attend, The Homecoming is rather different than Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical. It presented more heavy issues towards life. It argues about moral than love issues and most important it give treats to a play that critics woman. The tension that built in the theater hall is heat as the play began. The actor and actress has given fully cooperation and their contribution has given impact towards the audiences. However, the attire to attend play at KL Pac is rather light and it is not like at Istana Budaya where i have to wear formal attire. Thus it give a perspective to me that attending play is not just for high class status here unlike at Istana Budaya. As a conclusion, even both play used different setting, still the props and the background is same.

Pygmalion

PyGmalion, is one of the issue where we can debate about first impression.Does this first impression help to blind people? In this play, I can tell that it is interesting where Eliza wants to improve herself when she ask for help from Higgins and Pickering. higgins is a scientest of phonetics while Pickering is an Indian linguist. It is rather amusement when both of them can change Eliza in 6 months and she then became alike as a duchess. The issues that came to my mind is do Eliza can pass as a fake duchess and does this phonetics helps to impress people? In a short term, it does help to blind other people. But how long it is going to be? It is for a week or for months? Another issue that I can see is all about moral. Higgins does not show his morality even if he was born in high status family. Contradict to Eliza, she has her own moral when talking about the ethic even she come from low status family. She is intelligent in a way of what we call moral ethic. People should watch this movie as it give some issues to debate on.

The first play

Antigone, is the first play that i learned in EDU 3217. It was fascinating as this play introduce me what is life about and how it circle us. It is a tragis when Antigone has to sacrifice herself in order to create a self awareness towards their family. However, Creon is the antagonist in this play has turn the whole sacrrifise that antigone made into a disaster when he doesn't believe her. And this has turn back to him as he realise at the end of the play that he has been blinded with his proudness as a king. And as for Antigone, she has been sentenced to death. For the consequence, Creon's son has follow antigone by killing himself to prove that antigone is not guilty. As the result, it is late for Creon to realise that she is not guilty. He then killed himself when all of his family is turn over him. It is tragic when peole cannot learn from the past. From what I can tell, one should look back to learn but not to be pesimistic from the past.

A difficult play...

King Lear, as the title shows his name as the protagonist. The play I would rather classified as a difficult play. It deal with the issue of family relationship within the natural role of the family. Lear has divided the kingdom to be given to his daughters. But he asks them to confess their love. When Cordelia doesn't want to confess, he get mad. As the result he has disowned Cordelia. Lear has been blinded (like Creon) by his arrogant and he does not want to hear the reason why Cordelia acting that way. But as this is a tragic play, Lear then has realised his fault and changed. He then realised that both Goneril and Regan does not love him as much as Cordelia do. And it is late when both Cordelia and Lear has being manipulated by Edmund, Gloucester's illegitimate son. Not only them, all of Cordelia's family has being manipulated by Edmund. All of them has been blinded by their own greed. Except for Cordelia who has been the victim. The issue that comes out is whether a natural love should be show of or just make it as a usual action has given an impact to me in reading the play.

Shakespeare Wallah, is one of most enchanting drama that my whole batch have seen on one day, and when we have been asked to watch Shakespeare Wallah for the first time, it seems so boring at the beginning of the film. However, it then becomes more interesting when the conflict arise. Basically, the film is about a struggling English troupe of Shakespearen actors touring India, on an actual theater company called Shakespeariana. The company is consist of an actor and two actress which are a family, Tony, Carla and Lizzie Bukcingham. And the film was set on post-independence India at a time when English influence is dying and the world of Indian filmmaking is beginning to achieve its popularity. In the midst of their travels, the troupe's caravan breaks down, and an Indian playboy, Sanju, stops to help them. Lizzie and this playboy, Sanju then start their romance. But at the same time, Sanju also carries on an affair with a popular Indian film actress, Manjula. The familiar Merchant Ivory theme of misplacement within a society is here in full force. The film explores the two worlds; old British rule versus an independent India as well as the world of staged theater versus the newer medium of filmmaking. As at the first place the film is to show how their difficulties on signifying the Shakespeare play towards the Indian audience and the clash of two different cultures. And at the same time, we have been given how the Buckingham presented some of Shakespeare’s play in the film such as, Hamlet, Cleopatra, and Othello. Overall, the film teaches me how to overcome the difficulties when it does occur.

There was once when I remember when Dr. Edwin asked us to watch The Reduce Shakespeare Company was so intresting. Even though I didn’t really understand what are the theatre is all about, I just interpret it using my own perspective. For me, the theatre is all about how a play can be change into various performing action. And it’s so magnificient when the theater that for me much of the ancient Greek theater is so serious can be so fun when people in the theater turn it into a hilarious way of performing the theater. But, it does not effect the main event of the theater. The new version of the Shakspeare play has truly give a new impact for both, teachers and students to learn and to review it from new way of learning it as a fun and intresting play. The perspective of the old Shakespeare plays that it is boring and dull, is not anymore the main reason for us to take advantage for not studying literature. As for this new and light Shakespeare plays has turn to, have been more easier to be adapt by young learners such as form one students. It is not that these young leaners doesn’t want to study litareture, but because of the hard and heavy performance through the literature has made them feel bored to study literature. So, it is an intresting things for The Reduce of Shakespeare Company to explore a new way and gives ideas to us in learning literature. Thanks to them...

Tiresias

Tiresias, has often appears in Greek theater. Who is he in our perception?
Reading about Tiresias is intresting as he is the aged blind prophet whose appearance turns the plot in all Greek tragedies set in Thebes. He tells the truth about the past, present and future but however, the characters who need to pay attention are too distracted to listen. Too late when Oedipus and Creon realize that his words were accurate and reliable.
However I found that it fascinates me when there are two conflicting stories where both recorded by Apollodorus whom telling us why Tiresias became blind, and how he became the religious consultant to the rulers of Thebes at least for seven generations. In the first story, out in the countryside with his mother, young Tiresias saw Athena bathing nude in a pool. His reactions are not recorded, but his punishment was swift and severe where, he was struck blind, to ensure he would never again see what man was not intended to see. But having lost his eyesight, he was given a special gift, where he is be able to understand the language of the birds and thus it help him to predict the future
In the other version, near Mount Kyllene in the Peloponnese, Tiresias came upon a pair of snakes lustfully intertwined. He hit the copulating couple a smart blow with his stick, presumably striking a blow for animal decency. But Hera was not pleased, as the sensuous seductress of Zeus, she heartily approved of sex, even for the lower creatures. His punishment was cruel, and the worst a man could imagine. He was transformed into a woman, in mind as well as the body. But later after seeing the copulating snakes again, but this time alllowing them their pleasure; he was released from his sentence, and permitted to resume his masculinity. All could then have been well, but Tiresias was drawn into an argument between Hera and her husband Zeus. It is a common area for marital discussion wherethe question is "who has more pleasure in sex - the man or the woman?" Hera was clever enough to let Zeus believe that men were superior in this as in everything else. But it was then they decided to check with Tiresias for only he had known what it was actually like in the two roles. He revealed woman's greatest secret on a scale of ten, she gets nine parts of the pleasure to his one. Hera was furious, and instantly struck him blind where, Zeus couldn't do anything to stop her istead he did give Tiresias the gift of second sight.
Thus, I believe that in Greek theatre, Tiresias plays an important role as he is the God voice to remind we as the mortal to hear and being more sensitive towards our life.

On 8th Febuary, I have attend a malay theater which I thought would be simple. This Puteri Gunung Ledang musical theater, is the first formal theater that I attend, well so much in my life I went to theater where it is informal. I was shocked for the first time I when in the theater. It does really shows how it is really intresting. The props and the theater itself was not so different from English theater. From what I have learned, theater has chorus, soliloquoy, disguise, farce, spectacles and many more. And this theater also has the same component of what we called English or Greek theater. The ticket above is to prove that I have attend the musical theater. For the first time in my life, I had fall in love with the theater. In my heart, I dream of attending more theater in the future. However, there is a part that give me the feel of insulting when there are some people does not know how to behave properly in trhe theater and respect for the theater when it is begin. Hopefully, this people will learn the attitude of being in the theatre in the future.

When talking about Antigone, it is a tragic play. How can fate play our destiny? Is it true that our fate has been organise? And can we can our fate when we already know what will happen? Such questions keep linger in my mind as the play 'Antigone' gives a big theme to be think about. 'Fate vs Free will' has given a big impact to our daily life. Does every human being think like Antigone? Or people does think like Creon? Fate do play the role in the eyes of life. But what is important are because of our own desire to change the fate and thus it will change the fate. However it is in a condition, where God bless our will in changing the fate. And it is quite an irony, when there are people who doesn't believe in God. Theme in a play does give an impact to the audience. It cause people to think deeply and apply it in our daily life. As Greek theatre evolved around religious ritual, it is relate to us whereby people live in their own faith. And theme is around to strengthen the play.
